Huntington’s Disease - The Fight

On January 11th 2006, retired Capt. Denis P. Fleming, of the Fire Department of New York, lost his courageous battle against Huntington’s Disease (HD). was created to honor his legacy and continue the fight for a cure to this devastating hereditary neuro-degenerative disease. For over a decade we have held various fund raising events to support HD families impacted in our community and support leading research partners like University of California Davis, Stem Cell Program and Institute for Regenerative Cures led by Jan Nolta, Phd., Professor & Director and team.

Huntington's Disease is a devastating, hereditary degenerative brain disorder for which there is, at present, no effective treatment or cure. HD slowly diminishes the affected individual's ability to walk, think, talk and reason. Eventually, the person with HD becomes totally dependent upon others for this or her care. Sadly HD profoundly affects the lives of entire families-emotionally, socially and economically.

Team KJ is a group of friends and family that participate in and sponsor events in an effort to raise awareness and money to find a cure for Huntington’s Disease.

Our goal is to help support the families in our community effected by this disease and continue to support medical research that will ultimately find a cure. Team KJ was formed in support of and is named for Kara Jean Fleming who is fighting her own battle against HD.

Kara Jean - Team KJ

Kara Jean Fleming was only a few years in to her career as a devoted special ed elementary teacher when she became symptomatic with HD. After witnessing her father's HD journey first hand and the evil destruction it wrecked emotionally and physically, she did her level best to ignore the early symptoms. However, when the symptoms became more profound and progressive, she painfully realized she had a simliar fate. But, thanks to her extraordinary friends, community and family, she knew she would not face HD alone and that like her warrior dad, would fight this disease so it is indeed the last generation of HD. Kara Jean's unmatched fearlessness and will to live motivates us every day to battle HD.
